C+ remains minimum university entry grade for 2024 KCSE candidates

Ogamba urged the public to disregard erroneous reports, affirming that all candidates who meet the C+ entry requirement are eligible for university placement, continuing the government's commitment to expanding access to higher education.
The Ministry of Education has confirmed that the minimum entry requirement for university admission for the 2024 KCSE cohort is a Mean Grade of C+ (plus).
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba dismissed media reports that claimed the government would likely change the cut-off points due to budget constraints.

"The Government has not re-introduced cut-off points for university admission. The minimum admission requirement to university, which will apply to the 2024 KCSE cohort, is the Mean Grade of C+ (plus)," the CS said in a statement.
During the 2024 KCSE examinations, a total of 962,512 candidates sat for the exams as compared to the 899,453 in 2023. 480,310 were male while 482,202 were female.
"All the 246,391 students who attained the Mean Grade of C+ (plus) and above in the 2024 KCSE results are eligible for university admission," Ogamba stated.
Ogamba said all the candidates had been cleared to join various higher learning institutions to pursue careers of their choice.
The C+ grade has been the standard for university entry for several years, following a revision from the previous B- for females and B for males.
In response to recent media reports, Ogamba clarified that the cost of funding university education for the 2024 KCSE cohort will not be Sh100 billion, as previously reported.
"The Ministry projects that if all the 246,391 candidates join university, Sh25.85 billion will be required to fund their education annually. The Sh100 billion figure refers to the total cost over four years," Ogamba explained.
With regard to the annual placement calendar, Ogamba also announced that the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) will open its placement portal in March for the September 2025 intake.
"Already, the KUCCPS portal has been open since January 24 for the placement of applicants to the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Teacher Training Colleges and Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions for the March and May 2025 intakes," he said.
Ogamba urged the public to disregard erroneous reports, affirming that all candidates who meet the C+ entry requirement are eligible for university placement, continuing the government's commitment to expanding access to higher education.
